Proper Use Of Time Gaps In Your Resume

Do you have blanks that you cannot fulfil with professional experience, academic trainings or career development in your CV? Good news: it is not a situation that should be dramatized in principle. What is more important is to market your blanks nicely. You often do it in the first interview. Not to put an interpretation on these blanks in your CV will be right, especially if you have time blanks more than one.

Gaps due to unemployment?

Today, due to general economic crisis, gaps in professional life are accepted more compared to the past. Whether be a novice or be a manager: everybody can fall into the clutches of the unemployment. The point is how applicants choose to spend these gaps and how relevant it is to the position applied. Did they wait for a job all day, or did they improve themselves? For instance, by working free-lance or at a language course. The biggest trouble comes up if the unemployment lasts for a long time.  

Interrupted college or education?

Today, young people go to college or have education without knowing what is waiting for them and what is it that they really want. Result: the number of people  who interrupted their college education or who changed the line of education gradually increases.  Therefore, one who charts out and follows it to the end should not have difficulty on finding a job. Eventually, changing the branch is an indicator of the candidate has the courage to make an important decision. Maybe, your interrupted education or the experiences that you gained from the college can help you on the position you applied.

Travel broadens the mind!

One way to fill the blanks in the CV is travel. But, if you used this time to upgrade your knowledge of foreign language or to learn foreign cultures it’s a time spent wisely. Only then you can add these in your CV, for example under the title of "Knowledge and Skills". Look out! If you aim to gain points with a 3-month Canada trip, you have to come up with an English level and vocabulary when HR managers pass to English suddenly at the interview.

Another way to fill and to embellish the time gaps in your CV are social responsibility projects or time-consuming voluntary work. Did you take care of a relative of yours, or did you coach a handball team? Besides these activities look well in CV, they can be an evidence of your abilities.

Embellish instead of palaver

Valid rule about the black spots in CV: embellish, but don’t palaver! You should know that HR managers will test the reality of your statements. . During this process, you can forget the job if s/he understands or thinks that you lied. For example, if you said that you were coaching a handball team and if HR manager calls the club and asks about you, but nobody knows you or remembers you there, then you can forget the job... Honesty rules the business world. Do not forget that while writing your CV.
